This is my eighteenth children’s book activities post in our new #BookaDayinMay Instagram Challenge that I’m doing with my blogging buddies at CarrieElle.com and RockaByeParents.com.
Harvesting Hope
Harvesting Hope by Kathleen Krull is the story of a modern day hero named Cesar Chavez.
This book tells the life story of Cesar Chavez starting from when he was a young boy living and working with his migrant worker family. It touches the negative attitudes he met while trying to attend school before finally dropping out before high school. In his early twenties, he decided that he could make a difference for other migrant workers and began traveling and talking to other workers. He found a group called the National Farm Workers Association and worked his entire life to fight the large companies treatment of workers using nonviolent measures.
Book Activities
1. What is a Hero? – Young kids learn that heros have superpowers like Superman and Batman, but they don’t realize that your average person could be hero also. Talk about how Cesar Chavez was a hero to many people.
2. Writing Activity – Ask you child to draw a picture of one of their heros. Have them write (or dictate) two sentences telling why this person is their hero.
3. Plant a Garden – Cesar was a hero to migrant workers. Show your child the kind of hard work these people were expected to do daily by planning and planting a garden. Talk daily about the care and hard work it takes to maintain it.
