This is my tenth children’s book activities post in our new #BookaDayinMay Instagram Challenge that I’m doing with my blogging buddies at CarrieElle.com and RockaByeParents.com.
Jumanji
Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg is one of those classic children’s books. I am a big fan of his illustrations too. They compliment the story and pull out key pieces without telling the entire story.
Peter and Judy are home alone – and bored. They go to the park and find a game which they decide to take home and play. The directions say that you must finish the game no matter what happens, but they quickly learn that that might be harder than it seems when suddenly a lion lands in their living room and chases Peter upstairs. As they continue to play, their only hope to get the quickly appearing animals and problems to go away, they have more of an adventure than they expected.
Book Activities
1. Make Your Own Game – Download a game board template here and create your own game.
2. Watch the Movie – In 1995, Robin Williams starred in the film version of Jumanji. I love to compare books and movies and it’s a great way to spur discussion about books vs movies and why they are different….and which you like best.
3. Would You Rather…? – Our favorite meal time game is to play Would You Rather…? . I come up with 2 equally unappealing things (Would you rather have a lion chase you through the house or a python slithering towards you?) and the kids have to answer and tell why. The crazier your options, the more they like it.
