This is my fourteenth children’s book activities post in our new #BookaDayinMay Instagram Challenge that I’m doing with my blogging buddies at CarrieElle.com and RockaByeParents.com.
Mike Mulligan
Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, Mary Anne, were very important. They helped to build canals, highways, skyscrapers and more. But then one day, the electric shovels came along and took away all their jobs. Now there was nothing for them to do.
Mike and Mary Anne went to the town of Popperville where the townspeople were preparing to build a new town hall. Mike told them that he and Mary Anne could dig the hole in just one day or they wouldn’t have to pay him. But can he do it?
Book Activities
1. Unit Study – HomeschoolShare.com has a fun activity pack for this story.
2. Make a Cake – HomeschoolShare.com also has an idea for a chocolate cake. We made this when we read this book a couple of years ago, but I can’t find the picture. It’s so fun!
3. Visit a History Museum – With how much technology permeates their lives, kids don’t really understand what life used to be like. Visit a history museum and talk about the evolution of machines.
