This is my twenty-eighth children’s book activities post in our #BookaDayinMay Instagram Challenge that I’m doing with my blogging buddies at CarrieElle.com and RockaByeParents.com.
Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones
Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones by Judy Schachner is a fun book about a little Siamese kitty, that thinks he’s a Chihuahua, as he goes on a dino hunt with his favorite gang of misfits, the Chimichango gang. These books are full of fun word play and you definitely won’t mind reading these over and over and over and over again.
Skippyjon Jones wants to become a famous paleontologist and to that…he needs to find bones…which he actually steals from the neighbor’s dog. He goes on a dino hunt, into the jungle of his closet, to find the rare Skipposaurus. You won’t want to miss this adventure.
Book Activities
1. Mexican Hat Dance – Skippyjon Jones’s theme song goes to the tune of the Mexican Hat Dance. Here’s a link to the tune…see if y’all can sing his song!
2. Writing Activity – Have your child draw a picture of the adventures that await them in their “closet”. Then have them write or dictate at least two sentences to tell about that adventure.
3. Reader’s Theater – This page has loads of ideas for activities, but if you scroll to page 8, you’ll find a Reader’s Theater script, Skippyjon Jones: Lost in Spice. If your child is a read, print it out and divide up the parts (highlight their sections) and read it aloud. It’s a great way to work on reading fluency (check here for more tips on fluency).
