I LOVE to read, but I simply do not have time any more. So I usually listen to books on my phone while I’m doing other things. If you haven’t tried this, I promise it’s a great way to still “read” and get stuff done. I find that I will go out for a walk or vacuum just so I can listen to my book.
I was sent this book, Sweet Nothings by Janis Thomas and I was so disappointed to see there wasn’t an audio version. I tried to find the time to read it, but that’s just not how I work any more.
My great friend, Kari (who did this review for me before) volunteered to read it and loved it!
Sweet Nothings by Janis Thomas
Sweet Nothings is the first book by Janis Thomas that I’ve read, but I definitely will be reading more! Her writing flows and is very easy to read, and her humor kept me engaged and laughing out loud through the whole book.
Ruby is a very loveable character who is going through some tough times. When her husband of 18 years leaves her for Cheryl and she has the opportunity to fall apart, she instead chooses (read: needs) to immerse herself in her bakery and survive.
Her great friends, two teenaged kids, and her love of baking help keep her sane, and make for a ‘sweet’ read.
The only thing that I did not care for was the frequent discussion of desserts, and how Ruby compared everyone she met to a dessert that they reminded her of. I’m not a baker, so I didn’t always understand the references, and all they did was prove to make me hungry for sweets.
Overall I give the book 4 out of 5 stars, and will be searching for more by this author!
