Our back patio was an absolute mess. Toys every where! We’ve lived in this house for 4 years and have always had big plans for the backyard…but that’s never on the top of our spending list.

This year has been an unseasonably cool Spring and the boys have been spending loads of time outside. I wanted to be able to sit out there with them, but there just wasn’t anywhere that that was possible.

My husband has been dying for another project around the house to put his power tools to work, so I figured a DIY furniture project to build some outdoor seating would be right up his alley.

DIY Furniture Before After

DIY Furniture

I went looking around on the internet for some DIY furniture ideas and found some plans for an outdoor sectional on Ana White’s blog. It looked like an easy project that my husband could do in a weekend or two.

He agreed that this was a doable project and got to work planning!

Hunting for Cushions

I was SOOOO excited to actually use this space more wisely, that I immediately started shopping for cushions!

This was harder than it sounds. I have bought and returned MANY cushions in the last 2 weeks. I had finally given up hope of finding some that worked and started looking for plans to make my own.

But I had one set of cushions that I’d gotten at Target that I’d lost the receipt for. I decided they were close enough…and went and bought two more. LOL

These cushions are actually meant for a chair, so one side is smaller than the other, but that worked perfectly for this project!

I also found an outdoor rug for $20 that makes it very cozy and warm.

We LOVE it!

They boys absolutely love this space. They play out there constantly.

And my new laptop can still get a wireless connection outside, so I can sit out there with them and work while they play.

And as you can see from the After picture…the dogs are loving it too.

We’re not completely done with this project…it needs to be sanded down a bit more and we’d like to make a table for the middle that doubles as a toy box.

I’ve got a TON more ideas for DIY furniture that I’d like him to build around the house.

I found a place with over 1600 different plans and projects for woodworkers of all levels.

I want a new dining table for the breakfast nook next I think!

What DIY projects do you have on your list?
