A few years ago I struggled with finding the right pre-school for Connor, so I decided to homeschool him.
One of the first things I bought was a curriculum called Five in a Row. The premise of this is that you read the same book, typically a classic, every day for five days and do different activities with it.
I LOVED this and so did the kids…although I will admit with some of the books it did get a little old re-reading the same book day after day, but it allowed us to really examine different aspects of the book so it turned out ok.
Five in a Row
The curriculum is fairly old, originally copyrighted in 1994, but since the ideas aren’t really time dependent, it doesn’t matter.
We have the Five in a Row Volume 1 edition and there are 19 books with tons and tons of activity ideas for each of those books. (You can go here to see all the books in this volume.)
In fact, it was a bit overwhelming to try and choose which activities I wanted to do…
so I created a chart for myself and chose one activity per book per subject.
I was searching around on my computer and thought this would be great to revisit and that y’all might enjoy it too.
Just click the image to download it for yourself! (It doesn’t contain activities for all the stories, but it should give you a GREAT start!)
You will still need to purchase the curriculum to get the exact ideas for the activities, but this should help you plan out each day. Plus, there’s no need to do these in any order. We started out just by doing the ones we had on hand around the house or that corresponded with the coming holiday.
Now that my kids are in school, I kind of miss this time with them. I think that I will go back to doing this with them most evenings. It’s a great way to have your evening family activities plus reading time already worked out for you…although I will warn you that some of the books are hard to find so be sure to check my list and order them ahead of time.
This is great for preschool through 2nd graders. There are also other levels so be sure and check those out!
