Cookie's Week
Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward

Each Thursday I present a Baby Signs ® Story Time at the local toy store Toy Time. It’s lots of fun because I get to hang out with babies, but I don’t have to change their diapers or deal with them when they cry!

This week I choose to read the book Cookie’s Week. When I was a  teacher, I always liked to read this book at this time of year since we would be talking about the months of year, as well as the days of the week…which is what Cookie’s Week covers. Cookie is a silly little kitty that gets into lots of trouble. It’s a great book for sequencing and retelling as well as perfect for early readers.

At story time, not only do we learn signs to go along with a story, but we also sing songs and do a craft. The song we learned this week was called “Days of the Week” (see the theme ?) by Dr. Jean that’s set to the  The Addams Family tune. (I spent a LOT of time learning the actual words to the Addams Family theme song as a child. I may even still be able to sing it…if you ask at the right time. ;P Click here to see a YouTube video of the theme song.)

The real challenge to Story Time is finding a craft activity that ALL the kids that come can do..and since I typically have kids between 4 months and 5 yrs old there…it’s a bit tricky.

I found a cute little site called Making Learning Fun that had some activities for the kids to use with dot paints (you know those things you use while playing bingo) that corresponded with the story Cookie’s Week. The mommies could help the babies hold the bottles and the bigger kids could totally do it on their own. Plus it was a craft that was quick and wasn’t messy! Score on all sides!

Great eye-hand coordination activity

Totally counts as a craft, but wasn’t messy! Of course my kids can make even this messy by pushing too hard on the bottles and getting paint all of over the table. Oh well, it was worth a try!
