A couple of weeks ago a friend and I took 5 kids to Galveston for a few days to have some time at the beach.
It rained most of the 4 hour drive there, but we had hopes that the next day (our only full day) would be better.
We got up early the next morning and walked the block and a half to the beach. Five minutes later, it started pouring down rain. So we sat under a towel for a few minutes then walked back.
We spent the day at the museum, but it continued to rain all day. The next day it was nice while we packed up…of course.
We didn’t get a chance to play in the sand so I thought this cupcake sand castle project would be fun.
Cupcake Sand Castle
OK…so first I need to add a disclaimer…these are no where near perfect…but the kids did help so I had to let go of my perfectionism.
Supplies:
3 mini vanilla cupcakes
6 medium cupcakes
2 large cupcakes
2 sugar cones
2 waffle cones
2 handfuls of mashed Nilla Wafers
Vanilla icing
2 stick pretzels
2 Cheerieos
corn syrup
food brush
Directions:
1. Place the Nilla Wafers in a baggie and let the kids mash them….that’ll keep them busy so you can ice the cupcakes.
2. Cut the bottom inch off of the waffle cones and put them onto two of the medium cupcakes.
3. Dump the Nilla Wafers in a bowl and have the kids dip the cupcakes in them.
4. Paint the sugar cones with the corn syrup and then dip them in the Nilla Wafers.
5. Dip the pretzels in icing, place the Cheerios on top and put them into the mini cupcakes.
You can really do anything you want for these. I found these in the cupcake book What’s New Cupcake (which is AWESOME and our cupcake sand castle looks nothing like theirs).
Kids in the Kitchen
Did you have fun in the “kitchen” this week? Did you try a new food or a new kid friendly restaurant? Did your littlest ones use their snacks to count to 10? We invite you to share your experiences, photos, stories or recipes that include your #kidsinthekitchen. Come join me and my co-hosts Melinda at Look What Mom Found, Paula at Frosted Fingers and Sara at Sensibly Sara, each week linking up a post, new or old, that feature the theme Kids in the Kitchen. It doesn’t matter what you are doing as long as you are doing it together, enjoying it and learning something along the way.
- preparing healthy snacks
- having a tea party
- counting skills with m&ms
- pouring from measuring cups
- discovering a local restaurant that your kids love
- creating new family friendly recipes
