I’ve been on kind of dehydrator kick lately (check out my kale chips and my apple chips). I had heard that you could make fruit leather (aka fruit roll-up), but hadn’t gotten up the nerve to try…until this week.
Again it was super easy, and Connor ate them all before anyone else really had a chance to try them. I’ve had to start hiding my dehydrated fruit because he eats it all…which I know is kind of the point, but there are 4 other people in the house that want to try some too!
Fruit Leather
For this project I used both my new Omega juicer (which was massively on sale last I checked) and my Excalibur dehydrator. I would guess that you don’t need to, but man was it super easy with these tools (which I know are expensive, but I promise I’ve used them both every day for the past two weeks that I’ve had them).
First, I cleaned and cut the stems off of 25 strawberries. I put them into the juicer, but I used the blank screen instead of the juicing screen. This made both the juice and pulp come out together.
Then I strained off some of the juice and poured the pulp onto a sheet of parchment paper on the dehydrator screen.
I put it in the dehydrator for about 10 hours (making sure to put it up some where safe since it would be on over night and I didn’t want a dog tasting it before we did).
Once it was dried, I used kitchen scissors to cut it into strips .
It wasn’t super sweet, so Evan didn’t like it, but Maddi and Connor both liked it. Just strawberries in a different form, but with this snack I knew EXACTLY what was in it!
Kids in the Kitchen
Did you have fun in the “kitchen” this week? Did you try a new food or a new kid friendly restaurant? Did your littlest ones use their snacks to count to 10? We invite you to share your experiences, photos, stories or recipes that include your #kidsinthekitchen. Come join me and my co-hosts Melinda at Look What Mom Found, Paula at Frosted Fingers and Sara at Sensibly Sara, each week linking up a post, new or old, that feature the theme Kids in the Kitchen. It doesn’t matter what you are doing as long as you are doing it together, enjoying it and learning something along the way.
- preparing healthy snacks
- having a tea party
- counting skills with m&ms
- pouring from measuring cups
- discovering a local restaurant that your kids love
- creating new family friendly recipes
