There are many negative effects of drinking soda that we should all be aware of. Sure, the occasional sweet drink will not matter in the long run but drinking it every day is not good for you.
And I admit…I was one of those people that had a Coke everyday at 3pm as a pick me up for MANY years. But I can tell you I kicked the habit a few years ago and have never looked back (although I do still have a little if I feel nauseous…for some reason that works for me).
Negative Effects of Drinking Soda
Sugar
Soda companies are the biggest consumers of sugar. That is because just ONE can of soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar! That is a lot of sugar for our bodies to handle at one time. Our rising blood sugar levels cause our pancreas to work harder which can actually start to lead to a rise in insulin tolerance. Which in turn can lead to diabetes.
Caffeine
Most soda contains caffeine. Caffeine has been found to cause cancer, breast lumps, and can affect anyone that has a previously diagnosed (or even unknown) heart condition. It causes the heart to beat harder and faster. If there is already a heart condition it can accelerate its degeneration.
Dehydration
Because of its high sugar and caffeine content, our bodies actually need more fluids to break down what’s in the soda. Soda is what’s known as a diuretic. This essentially means that it takes more fluid to break down than it supplies us with. It also increases the expelling of fluids in the body through urine and sweating. For more information read 10 Signs of Dehydration.
Artificial Sweeteners
A lot of soda brands have switched from real sugar to artificial sweeteners. These can be just as, if not more dangerous than sugar. Chemicals like aspartame (which is used as a sugar substitute) have been linked to things like seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders.
Oral Health
The acidity of sodas slowly eat through the enamel of teeth. Slowly eroding the first defense to cavities and tooth decay. Drinking soda often can lead to a buildup of plaque which causes serious gum diseases like gingivitis. Adding to tooth decay and the rapidity of tooth loss in older people.
Soda may be fine now and then but you definitely shouldn’t drink it every day. At least try to up your water intake if you do drink a lot of soda. Some of these negative effects of drinking soda can lead to serious health problems that eventually lead to death!
