Smoothies are packed with so many awesome vitamins and minerals that they should really be a staple in everyone’s diet daily.

BUT…getting my kids to drink a smoothie is like asking them to drink gasoline – not gonna happen.

I’ve decided that maybe I’m trying to stuff too many of those vitamins and minerals into the smoothies at the beginning…maybe the trick is to get them to get used to the texture and then start sneaking healthy things in.

This week we started with an orange smoothie.

Orange Smoothie Recipe

A few weeks ago I received an awesome book to review, Best 100 Juices for Kids, to help me on my “sneak good food into my kids” adventure.

I started with the Orange Smoothie. This one had a little “pre-step” that you have to do…make a Honey Syrup.

recipe from Best 100 Juices for Kids by Jessica Fisher
Ingredients
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 2 tablespoons Honey Syrup (see below)
  • 1 tablespoon nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Honey Syrup
  2. Combine the honey and water in a medium saucepan.
  3. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the honey completely.
  4. Remove from the heat and let cool completely.
  5. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.
  6. Orange Smoothie
  7. Place the orange juice, ice, honey syrup, milk powder, and vanilla extract in the blender cup or pitcher.
  8. Blend until very smooth.

You can use this Honey Syrup to sweeten all your smoothies…YUM! As you can see Maddi loved it! I liked it too…kind of reminded me of Orange Julius…LOL.
