I’m one of those lucky few who gets to enter menopause a whole 10 years early…and that has messed up my sleep horribly. My hormones are totally out of whack so I take bio-identicals, but that only partly helps.
I also have 3 kids and 3 dogs who all think that they MUST communicate with me at some point during the night. Sleep is a precious commodity to me…I’m one of those people that calculates how many hours of sleep I can get if I pass out right that minute. I’m lucky to get 5-6 hours a night…and I try and protect those hours.
One day last week I looked at my nightstand and thought, “Maybe I have trouble falling asleep because my nightstand is so cluttered!” So I decided to do a little Spring cleaning.
I admit…I use my phone and/or my tablet right up until I turn off my light and try to go to sleep. I know that’s a no-no and that it messes with my natural sleep cycles because of the light it produces…but when am I going to actually get any work done when my kids never sleep!
My Nightstand
The other day when I walked into my room though, I saw this…
right next to my head (where I’m supposed to be the most relaxed of the day) is a table that looks like a junk drawer.
My kids had been sick so there were dirty tissues and yes, even a puke bucket…as well as books I had attempted but never actually read and a random assortment of other crap.
I decided it was time to put all the crap somewhere else and take back my nightstand…and hopefully reclaim some of my sleep…plus it was a good excuse to go shopping.
Nightstand Makeover
I had heard about a special light bulb, the NEW GE Align™ PM LED , that is supposed to help promote your body’s natural sleep cycles. So I logged right in to Amazon and ordered one quickly and easily.
I LOVE Amazon Prime because just 2 days later…I got my box. I also ordered an essential oil diffuser so I could blast the smell of lavender into my room and help with creating a calming atmosphere.
This light bulb contains very low amounts of blue light which creates a nice orange glow in the room which should help with maintaining better sleep rhythms by producing more melatonin in your body. GE Align™ also sells an AM LED light bulb to help you wake up…because that can be an issue too for those of us that don’t get enough sleep. (You can find both only on Amazon.)
I also have this seriously old alarm clock that has a CD player in it. So I went and found my old copy of The Trinity Session by Cowboy Junkies so I could have some relaxing music to play too.
Final Product
I’ve found that I am super excited to walk into my room and see my “new” nightstand. It’s sooo much more calming plus my room has a nice glow and smells amazing!
I’d love to encourage you to take some time to look at your surroundings and see if you can reduce the clutter in and around your bed to help you get better sleep.
