A few years ago I bought this cast iron skillet. I had heard about hormones and chemicals leaching out of non-stick cookware and causing health problems…and since I had enough health issues, I wanted to try and cut down on anything that might cause more.

It takes me two hands to lift this sucker and I had no idea how to clean it at first.

I had heard that you weren’t supposed to use soap, but what do you do about tough stuck on food.

Today I’m going to share the well kept secret of how to clean a cast iron skillet!

The other day I made one of our favorite recipes, Sweet Potato Hash. And above is what the skillet looked like when I was done. UGH!

But I recently discovered the secret to cleaning – salt!

How to Clean a Cast Iron Skillet

First you put the cast iron skillet in hot water and use a wooden spoon or spatula to get as many of the chunks off as you can.

Next you put it back on the stove on medium heat for 1 minute.

Then you put 1/2 cup of salt and 1/4 cup vegetable oil in the skillet. Take a few paper towels and scrub the salt and oil around making sure to get the stuck on spots.

Last rinse out the skillet again and put back on the stove on medium heat for 1 more minute.
